Hey Skinny readers… I trust you’ve all been keeping warm and well. Yoh, Johannesburg has definitely decided to remind us that summer is long gone. The mornings are colder, the evenings come quicker, and suddenly comfort food starts calling a little louder. But instead of fighting it, we’ve been leaning into it… in the best way possible.
Let me take you into our Sundays.
Relationship as foundation for building a Healthy Kitchen
There’s something special that happens in the Skinny Makoti kitchen when Sunday rolls around. It’s not rushed, it’s not planned to perfection… it just flows. Shadre and I step into the kitchen with a loose idea—sometimes it’s a theme, sometimes just a craving—and from there, we build.
She’ll take on one part, I’ll handle another, and before we know it, we’re moving in sync. Music in the background, a little laughter, a little tasting here and there… and somehow, we’re not just cooking—we’re connecting.
That’s when it hit me… we’re not just preparing meals. We’re building something much bigger. We’re building a kitchen. Together.
And not just any kitchen—a healthy one. Not the strict, no-fun, “diet starts Monday” kind… but a space that reflects how we want to live, how we want to love, and how we want to feel.
Because the truth is, there’s something quietly powerful about creating a shared kitchen as a couple. It’s not about choosing between almond or oat milk (although, let’s be honest, those debates do happen 😄). It’s about aligning your lives in the smallest, most intimate way—through food.
The power of Communication in the Kitchen

It starts, as all good things do, with a conversation.
Not about weight. Not about cutting carbs or chasing trends. But about why. Why do we want to eat better? Why does this matter to us? For us, it’s about energy, feeling good in our bodies, and creating a lifestyle that we can actually sustain—not something we start and stop every few months.
And what I’ve come to realize is this—when you’re heard in that moment, when your partner really listens—that becomes your foundation. Not just for your meals, but for your relationship moving forward.
From there, everything else becomes easier.
Shopping turns into an experience instead of a chore. You’re not walking through the aisles alone anymore, throwing random things into the trolley. Now it’s conversations, little compromises, shared decisions. You start picking foods you both enjoy, finding healthier alternatives without forcing it, and slowly but surely, your kitchen begins to reflect both of you.
And then comes the magic—cooking together.
The Beauty of Partnership

Now I know some of you are thinking, “Chef, my partner can’t cook.” Trust me… it doesn’t matter. One chops, one stirs. One tastes, one plates. It’s not about perfection—it’s about presence. It’s about those moments where the phones are down, the world is quiet, and it’s just the two of you figuring it out together.
That’s where connection grows.
And the beauty of it all? You don’t have to overcomplicate anything. We’ve learned to keep things simple—balanced, nourishing, and satisfying. A bit of protein, fresh veggies, something hearty to keep you going, and those good fats that make everything taste just right.
But let me say this clearly—there’s always room for joy.
A healthy kitchen isn’t one where you eliminate everything you love. It’s one where you embrace balance. Some nights it’s clean and light, other nights it’s pasta, chocolate, or a cheeky takeaway. And you know what? That’s okay. Because you’re sharing it. You’re enjoying it together.
That’s what makes it meaningful.
Over time, these small moments turn into rituals. Morning coffee before the day begins. Sunday cooking sessions like ours. Late-night snacks while catching up on life. These are the things that anchor you.
These are the things that turn a house into a home.
And of course, along the way, you’ll have differences. Different cravings, different appetites, different moods. But that’s where communication comes in. Not control. Not pressure. Just understanding. Supporting each other without trying to change each other.
Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about being perfect. It’s about showing up.
It’s about choosing each other—in the small, everyday moments.
Now before you settle into those Netflix and chill vibes, let me leave you with a few simple, delicious recipes you can whip up together in no time… something light, comforting, and perfect for this chilly season.
First up, a Warm Lemon & Herb Chicken Bowl.

Pan-sear chicken breast with garlic, lemon zest, olive oil, and fresh herbs. Let it rest, slice it up, and serve it over a bowl of fluffy quinoa or brown rice. Add some roasted veggies—think carrots, courgettes, and peppers—and finish it off with a drizzle of yogurt dressing. Simple, nourishing, and packed with flavour.
Next, a Creamy Mushroom & Spinach Toasted Stack.

Sauté mushrooms with garlic, a touch of cream, and black pepper until rich and silky. Toss in fresh spinach right at the end. Serve this over toasted sourdough and top with a perfectly soft poached egg. It’s comforting, indulgent, but still beautifully balanced.
And for something sweet, a Quick Berry Yogurt Dessert.

Layer Greek yogurt with fresh berries, a drizzle of honey, and a sprinkle of granola or crushed nuts. It’s light, refreshing, and just the right amount of sweet to end the night.
And just like that… you’ve created more than just a meal. You’ve created a moment.
That wraps up this week’s blog. Enjoy your shared time in the kitchen with your loved one. Stay warm, stay healthy, and most importantly… stay skinny.
Same time, same place. 👨🏾🍳✨
