Hellooo Skinnies! How are you all doing?

Welcome back to another epic edition of The Skinny Chef Diaries!

Let me start by asking you a nostalgic question...

Where were you 16 years ago when South Africa hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2010?

Soccer player in yellow and green leaps to kick the ball as a black-clad defender chases, with a crowded stadium behind.

I bet the memories are flooding back already! That unforgettable goal by Simphiwe Tshabalala against Mexico in the opening match, the deafening sound of vuvuzelas echoing across the country, and the electric atmosphere in the stadium that even Paris Hilton couldn't resist experiencing.

IT WAS TIME FOR AFRICA!

South African soccer fans in yellow cheer, one blowing a blue vuvuzela amid waving flags; Bafana Bafana text on shirt.

For the Skinny Chef, it was an unforgettable chapter of my life. I had just landed my first job on South African soil as one of the Head Chefs at FNB Stadium, catering for VIP guests and assisting with the German delegation. Germany had hosted the previous World Cup and arrived ready to show us how it should be done.

But haha... South Africa wasn't about to be outshone!

We delivered at the highest standard, showcasing our hospitality, warmth, and world-class service to visitors from across the globe.

This week, I found myself reflecting on some of my favourite foodie throwback moments from the 2010 World Cup, exploring what's happening around Jozi this weekend, and dreaming about the incredible street food experiences awaiting football fans in Mexico during the opening stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

There is something magical about being a foodie who loves eating but somehow never gains a kilogram. We are the "Skinny Chefs" — the ones constantly tasting sauces, sampling desserts, and never saying no to a second helping!

Haha... from my experience, there are very few of us left!

Throwback Moments Every Skinny Chef Will Understand

Cheering crowd in yellow shirts raises a gold trophy at a stadium, with South African flags and excited faces.

My skinny memory...

Soweto was absolutely buzzing with vuvuzelas as football fans and foreign nationals from every corner of the globe queued at taxi ranks, explored the streets, and soaked up the South African spirit.

I remember hosting a party for some of the crew I worked with at Joel and Tshepiso's house (my brother and his wife)... which they didn't really know about at the time.

Eish! I just let the cat out of the bag. SOORYEE!

Curious tortoiseshell cat peeks from a brown paper bag with purple text against a plain gray background.

Anyway, I was young, full of energy, and it was absolutely epic! Haha!

I remember seeing the most incredible game-day setups all over town giant screens, packed beer gardens, colourful fan parks, and just feeling like the entire world was right there at my fingertips.

Aaah... what a memory.

There is nothing quite like experiencing football, people, and food all in one electric venue.

Every foodie has memories attached to flavours.

Family braais on warm afternoons.

Sunday lunches that stretched late into the evening.

Corner takeaways after a night out.

Recipes lovingly passed down through generations.

The meals may have been simple, but the memories remain unforgettable.

For Skinny Chefs, food isn't just something we eat...

It's part of our story.
