Hello, Skinny readers! Welcome back to another edition of the Skinny Chef Weekly Blog! How are you all doing? I hope you’re feeling as fantastic as I am because honestly, I’m doing GREAT! The holidays have been nothing short of amazing, leaving me feeling relaxed, refreshed, and, let’s just say, absolutely festive.

Looking back at last December, I can confidently say this year’s holiday season has been so much better! I’ve already crossed a few items off my personal bucket list, which feels incredible. Don’t get me wrong—last year was lovely, but it simply can’t compare to how this year is shaping up. It’s been an absolute blast, and we haven’t even reached the peak yet!

I’m spending another magical holiday with the love of my life, Shadre (who, by the way, is the hottest thing in Joburg—yes, I said it!). Shadre is probably going to scold me for that unscripted moment, but hey, what’s life without a little spice? 😜

Eric Miyeni

Now, let’s get serious. This week’s blog is a trip down memory lane, as I reminisce about my incredible friend, Eric Miyeni, and the profound influence he’s had on my journey to becoming the Skinny Chef. Eric is more than just an accomplished author of A Letter from Paris—a brilliant collection of essays paired with quirky and evocative black-and-white photographs. He’s also a poet, novelist, photographer, actor, and an all-around creative powerhouse.

A Letter from Paris by Eric Miyeni

I’ll be honest: when I first met Eric, he wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. Haha! But, as life would have it, our friendship blossomed into something meaningful and impactful. Fun fact: Eric is the one who coined the name “The Skinny Chef”! I’ll never forget the time I shared the first draft of The Skinny Chef Diaries with him. His thoughtful critique and honest advice are moments I’ll always treasure. So, what better way to honor that friendship than by catching up with the man himself? Skinny readers, please give a warm welcome to Eric Miyeni!

Skinny Chef: Hey, squire! Thanks for taking the time to chat with me. It’s been a while! For our readers who might not know, could you give us a glimpse into the world of Eric Miyeni?

Eric: Hey, Skinny! It has been a minute! Well, many people think I wear too many hats—poet, essayist, novelist, photographer, actor, producer, director, and advertiser. But the truth is, everything I do revolves around one thing: communication. That’s the essence of it all. I just happen to use every sense to make it happen!

Skinny Chef: Haha! That’s quite the answer, but I love it! Now, take us down memory lane. Do you remember when we first met?

Eric: Oh, absolutely—it’s been years! And don’t forget, I gave you the name “The Skinny Chef.”

Skinny Chef: Guilty as charged! Alright, let’s lighten the mood a bit. What are your plans for the Christmas holidays?

Eric: My brothers and I, along with our partners, wives, and kids, usually gather at my mother’s house for Christmas. It’s a relaxed, casual affair that happens any day before Christmas. On Boxing Day, everyone is free to go their own way and do whatever they please.

Skinny Chef: Sounds wonderful—nothing beats family time. Speaking of routines, do you follow any fitness regimens?

Eric: Not really, though I should! I had a personal trainer once, and it was great. I even started a self-designed routine earlier this year, but it got derailed by traveling. My plan for the new year is to restart it—outside in my garden, soaking in the morning sun. Healthy vibes all the way!

Skinny Chef: Love that for you, squire! Alright, let’s wrap this up with a foodie question: What’s your favorite meal?

Pap, Wors and Tomato gravy

A South African favorite - Pap , Wors and Tomato gravy

Eric: Oh, that’s easy—pap, boerewors, and an onion-tomato gravy. It’s my go-to feel-good meal, though I don’t indulge every day. When it comes to cooking, I’m quite proud of my oxtail and mashed potatoes. I’ve perfected it with a Jamie Oliver-inspired twist!

Skinny Chef: Sounds absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing, Eric. You’re a living legend in my eyes, and I’m forever grateful for the impact you’ve had on my journey. Skinny readers, that’s a wrap on this wonderful catch-up with one of my mentors.

Catching up with Eric was truly smashing! Thank you all for tuning in to this week’s blog. Stay safe, stay healthy, and most importantly, stay skinny! Have a blessed Christmas, and I’ll see you same time, same place, next week!

Special Thanks to Our Creative Director Shardre Leonard.
