Home sweet Home

Hello Skinny Readers!

How are you all doing? I trust you’ve had a blessed and beautiful week. For the next two weeks, I’ll be sharing stories straight from the Motherland—touching base with my roots, reconnecting with family, and, of course, diving into incredible food experiences.

The Fresh Prince of Malawi has returned

Now, for those who don’t know this about me—I’m originally from Malawi. And believe it or not, I haven’t been back in over 30 years. I know, I know… what the fudge, right?! But yes, the moment finally arrived. On Tuesday the 3rd, I flew out of Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport and landed safely in Blantyre two hours later. And that, my friends, is where the journey truly begins.

I was welcomed at the airport by my brother, Kumbukani. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect. Malawi—my home—felt almost alien to me after so many years. We headed out to pick up my niece Vimbai from Saint John’s School, and then swung by to collect my other niece, Takunda, from her workplace. Wow—these girls have grown into such amazing young women!

That evening, Vimbai (the youngest) cooked us the most heartwarming, tasty welcome meal: perfectly roasted chicken served with a hearty lentil and bean broth. I was blown away by the flavours and her technique. I guess culinary skills do run in the bloodline—haha! It was such a joy catching up with them as they warmly welcomed their long-lost uncle into their home. What a vibe!

Now here’s the family joke that’s been doing the rounds on our WhatsApp group—yes, at my expense, of course—they’re all calling me “The Lost Prince” who has returned home. Eye-rolls aside… it’s kinda cute, lol.

Day 2: The Plot Thickens

Joe's Coffee Shop

My brother Kumbu planned a lovely itinerary for my visit. We kicked things off with lunch at a local spot called Joe’s Coffee Shop. Great food, warm smiles, and genuine hospitality—classic Malawi. We then headed to a vibey open courtyard venue called RSVP—hype music, sunshine, and yes, my first beer of the day. Hey, I’m on holiday!

After vibing there for a while, we fetched Vimbai from school and headed home to freshen up before going out again. That evening, we visited Lotus Hotel for drinks with Kumbu’s old friend, Rodney—who’s in the food and beverage industry and oversees several hotel outlets.

And this is where the night gets really interesting.

We got talking about our respective culinary journeys, and Rodney was amazed by my experience. (Well, I am the Skinny Chef, after all!) He insisted we meet one of his business associates, Ramy Waheed, who runs the prestigious Amaryllis Hotel.

Suddenly, this chilled night out turned into an eventful adventure. We found ourselves at one of Malawi’s most luxurious hotels—panoramic views of Blantyre lighting up the skyline. Ramy welcomed us like family. We talked food, life, and purpose. And then—boom—he casually suggests we collaborate.

I'm thinking, “Okay, more consultation work? Sure, sounds good.” Mind you, I had zero intention of doing any work on this trip. But hey—when opportunity knocks, you answer!

So here I am, checking into the Amaryllis Hotel for a two-night stay—all expenses covered. To top it off, Ramy arranged a press release announcing that The Skinny Chef is in town. What?! I did not see that coming.

That Thursday night, we had a beautiful dinner at the hotel with Kumbu, Takunda, and Vimbai, followed by a cozy movie night—with a view! It was one of those surreal, heart-full moments that just remind you how magical life can be when you simply say yes.

So yes, Skinny readers—the Fresh Prince of Malawi is officially back home! Haha!

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and walk this journey with me as I reconnect with my roots. Next stop: Lilongwe. Can’t wait to share Part 2 of Barefoot in Malawi with you all.

Love you all—stay safe, stay inspired, and most importantly… stay skinny!

Same time, same place next week!
